Welcome to our Website about the Tread Lightly Caravan – New Zealand's mobile environmental education classroom.
The Tread Lightly Caravan (TLC) is now on the road visiting schools in Auckland. The TLC is a mobile environmental classroom, packed with lots of fun, interactive exhibits and experiences. All of the exhibits have the same key educational messages:
– our every day life style choices have environmental consequences which are not sustainable;
- small changes in the way we live will help save resources (water, materials, energy) and protect our precious plants and animals and their habitats;
- if we don't act, we will impact the quality of life for the next generation - our children and grand childrenmay not experience the beauty of nature the way we do now.
The TLC is designed to bring science and nature into Auckland schools by providing a unique and powerful experience. The project developers (a not-for-profit charitable trust called the Urban Ecoliving Charitable Trust) want to inspire more young people to be interested in the environment, and potentially go on to careers in science, engineering and technology. The earth's future is dependent on the next generation's ability to understand and solve technical issues like climate change, water allocation and protecting biodiversity.
Following three years in concept development and construction, the TLC is now visiting Auckland schools and attending community events. We are receiving great feedback from both teachers and students. All of our educational modules (for waste, energy, transport and water) are linked directly to the NZ curricula. Teachers also really appreciate a high-quality environmental educational resource coming into the school. The target age for our educational material is 8-12 years old. But we have lots of interesting activities and educational material for age ranges from 0 through to 90 (and beyond).
All visitors to the TLC will leave with a clear understanding of the environmental consequences of their individual actions and be inspired to live more sustainable life styles.
